24 “Seventy ‘sevens’ are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy Place
COMMENT: Seventy sevens are 490 periods of time and the next verse tells us when the time starts. A strong case can made that these six things pertain to Christ but that is not the main point here. Some translations say Seventy weeks because sevens can be translated weeks in Hebrew. Those periods of time in my opinion refer to years. I have spent a lot of time on this and have flipped my position several times and if I am wrong, I want to flip again. Check it out.
25 “Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble.
The word goes out to rebuild starts with the second decree of Artaxerxes (445-444 BC) to rebuild the city. See Neh 2: 1-8 Starting here, 490 lunar years ( 360 days per year as the Jews used ) end the 70 weeks around 37 to 38 A.D. This would place the start of the 70th week near the beginning of Jesus' public ministry (about 30 to 31 A.D.) To come up with this date to use our calendar of today you would have to convert the lunar years as the Jews used to Solar years we use to come up with 30 to 37 AD for the last week. Keep in mind you have 5.25 more days in a solar year than a lunar year. Jesus was the Anointed One and He is called the ruler here and the very next verse tells us what happens to the Anointed one, the ruler .
26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed.
COMMENT
The end of the city and the sanctuary came like a flood because this was a spiritual destruction when Jesus the anointed one who was called the ruler nailed the Old Law to the cross at his death and the Old Law was fulfilled in the middle of the last week. In the previous verse we see there are 7 sevens and 62 sevens for a total of 69 sevens which would bring us to the last seven ( week ) of the 70 . That would bring us to the last 7 years of the 490 years ( 70 sevens). Keep in mind the 70 sevens is 490 years for all of these 6 things in Vs 24 to be accomplished. In the last week the Anointed one would be put to death which is confirmed by multiple sources in history as well as the New Testament.
The people of the ruler would be Christians since in the previous verse the Anointed one was called the ruler. The Christians did not need the temple nor the blood of bulls and goats making the temple not necessary . Since the purpose of Jerusalem was the temple a purpose of Jerusalem was also done away with when Jesus nailed the Old Covenant to the cross.
27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.
COMMENT
Jesus confirmed his covenant the last seven of his life on earth by his miracles and resurrection from the dead. In the middle of the seven he put an end to sacrifice and offerings because he fulfilled the writings of the Old Testament by nailing it to the cross making the sacrifice of bulls and goats of no use and the purpose of Jerusalem fulfilled. He ( Jesus ) the Anointed one the ruler will set up ( not carry out but set up in the last week) an abomination that causes desolation which occurred after the 70th seven when Titus destroyed Jerusalem in AD 70 as Jesus had prophesized would happen when He said, “ Not one stone would be left on another”. This occurred about 32 to 33 years after the last 7 years when Jesus was on earth and was put to death.
Egypt can make a claim to be one of the greatest historical countries. When one looks at their pyramids, engineering, art, libraries, temples, armies, wealth, treasures, agriculture, the reliance by other countries for Egyptian protection and how long it endured as an ancient power it is easy to see why one might make this claim. The grandeur of the movie Cleopatra staring Elizabeth Taylor does not seem to be an exaggeration to those that study ancient history. However, in spite of these many blessings we read about some coming catastrophizes. (L C) One of them is as follows because of their idol worship:
Ezekiel 29:15 Egypt shall not anymore lift itself above nations and in Ezekiel 30:14 they shall be a base kingdom. When we look at the Philistines Edomites and Moabites or the Perizzites who did not survive we notice that like the Jews the Egyptians did survive. Egypt and several other countries twice gained up on Israel only to lose the war convincingly. Egypt remains a base nation and no longer rules other nations. However, they have been ruled by the Babylonians, Greeks, Romans, and English among others. (Kenny Barfield - The Prophet Motive )
History records that Egypt was a land of great stability due to a strong central government. However, in Isaiah 19:2 we read, “And I God will incite Egypt against Egypt, and a man will fight against his brother, and a man against his neighbor, city against city and kingdom against kingdom.” Not long after Isaiah said this Egypt went into a period of civil war and their weakened position allowed Ethiopians that were previously afraid of Egypt to attack. The ancient writes Herodotus and Diodorus Siculus seem to be confirming/quoting Isaiah’s verse. From Kenny Barfield’s book, The Prophet Motive.
Memphis was known as the great temple city of Egypt due to hundreds of large temples and it was also large and populist in the first century BC. Six hundred years later the Roman Governor of Egypt had a palace there. As late as the 13th century many temples could still be seen standing. When Memphis reached its pinnacle Ezekiel gave them a warning in 30:13 where he said, “Thus says he Lord God. I will also destroy the idols and make the images cease. This would not be an easy task for man since idols existed by the thousands. Memphis has been so completely destroyed that the site of ancient Memphis has been the subject of debate during the 19th century. From Kenny Barfield’s book, The Prophet Motive.
TYRE & BABYLON
A BIBLICAL EVIDENCE/PROPHECY CONCERNING TYRE & BABYLON: See. Ezekiel 29:18 The ancient Phoenician city of Tyre was a very wealthy city state on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. They were subject to Egypt and the Assyrians before going to war with Nebuchadnezzar King of Babylon. As subjects they paid taxes to the more powerful empires. It was prophesized that Nebuchadnezzar would destroy them because of their evil ways and the Babylonians would not profit from their war with Tyre. Thought Babylon destroyed the mainland city of Tyre they did not profit from it because many of the people of Tyre left and spread out into the Mediterranean and took their valuables with them before the destruction.
TYRE & ALEXANDR THE GREAT
A BIBLICAL EVIDENCE/PROPHECY CONCERNING ALEXANDER & TYRE, Ezekiel 26:14 NIV I will make you a bare rock, and you will become a place to spread fishnets.
Alexander, when he was on his campaign to conquer the world, he requested that the people on the Island of Tyre let him worship at their temple. This went against their customs, so they said No. Alexander sent a delegation to them and they said no, murdered the delegation and threw them over the 100-foot vertical walls of the city into the sea. The Phoenicians of the Isle of Tyre felt confident that they would be safe since the Egyptians and Assyrians could not penetrate the island. Since Alexander was not a man to take no lightly, he took the mainland runs of Tyre which Nebuchadnezzar had destroyed and built a causeway from the mainland to the island. Over time this causeway which you can still see some of it today has sunk down into the sea and yes, thousands of years later men cast their nets into sea where the ruins of Tyre are to catch fish. The causeway was about ½ mile long and 250 feet wide with and average depth of approximately 18 ft.
Jer47:5 " Gaza would become like a shaved head"—Dr. Alexander Keith in the 19thcentury planned to spend time in the city of Gaza but a plague kept him from the city. As a result, his party set out to find a smooth place to pitch their tent. He eventually chose some sand dunes not far from the city where he accidently stumbled upon the remains of the ancient city Gaza hidden under the desert sand. The location had become as smooth as a shaved head.
WHAT GREAT EVIDENCE! GOD HAS SHOWN US BY HIS POWER OF PROPHECY: Egypt and Assyria caused God to display his rath toward them because of their many sins. As a result, as previously said it was prophesized that Egypt would be a base kingdom and Assyria would in essence would cease to exist. In Nahum 1:14 You (Assyria ) will have no descendants to hear your name. Zephaniah 2: 13And He will stretch out His hand against the north and destroy Assyria, And He will make Nineveh ( the capitol) a desolation, Parched like the wilderness. Zephaniah 2:15 This is the exultant city Which dwells securely, Who says in her heart, "I am, and there is no one besides me." How she has become a desolation, A resting place for beasts! Everyone who passes by her will hiss And wave his hand in contempt. Nineveh the capital of Assyria never returned and lost their identity for ever while former inhabitants that survived the onslaught no longer wanted to claim citizenship of Nineveh.
“Not all cities suffer the same fate as the Assyrian city of Nineveh. For example, Jerusalem was captured by the Babylonians and Romans yet still exists. However, Nineveh never returned and lost their identity forever while former inhabitants that survived the onslaught no longer wanted to claim citizenship of Nineveh” Maier
WHO DO YOU KNOW TODAY THAT CLAIMS TO BE AN ASSYRIAN DECENDANT? THE ONCE PROUD AND MOST POWERFUL EMPIRE IN THE WORLD NO LONGER EXIST SINCE IT WAS LONG AGO ASSORBED INTO OTHER COUNTRIES.
It was prophesized during the time of Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 11:3-4 NIV that " a mighty king would arise and will be able to do whatever he pleases. After he has arisen, his empire will be broken up and parceled out to the four winds of heaven. It will not go to his decedents, nor will it have the power he exercised, because his empire will be uprooted and given to others. " This prophecy was made about the world power Greece that would follow Babylon and then Persia. It was talking about the Greek Empire which was led by Alexander the Great hundreds of years after the prophecy. According to history Alexander had no descendants to inherit his empire proving the first part of the prophecy and his generals fought over the division of his empire which was divided into 4 parts (among 4 generals) which on the map looks like a northern, southern, eastern, and western division proving the later part of this prophecy. Nebuchadnezzar lived around 600 BC and Alexander around 300 BC.
